Reflection

During my time in Professor Hammett’s class, I learned so much about different writing styles, specifically absurd fiction. I did not know anything about absurd fiction and some of the fantastic authors we looked at. I really enjoyed learning about the amazing absurdist. This course changed my perspective on writing.

Absurd fiction was new to me; I had never heard of it before I took this course. I didn’t expect to like reading the work of these authors as much as I did. It was something I had never read before and have really come to enjoy. We talked about many authors. However, Franz  Kafka was my favorite author whom we discussed. I liked his work because he always used metaphors, and his writings told a story that conveyed a problem that was going on in society. I chose to write about him because his opinions were very different from other authors. Franz Kafka sparked my interest because his stories were very dark, and I wanted to see his perspective on an epidemic.

I am a senior in high school, and I have written many essays throughout my high school career, but none of them were like the ones I wrote in this class. I learned about new formatting skills and how to write a rhetorical analysis essay. I took Composition I at Rogers State University, and taking Composition II at Tulsa Community College has been a very different experience. This course challenged me in a lot of ways. I have always considered myself a good writer, but this class made me think about writing in a different way.

Since this was not an in-person class, I had to learn so much more about working online. I had worked online a minimal amount during the pandemic, but it was nothing like this. I specifically learned how to use Blackboard and how to create a website using WIX. Everything is online these days, so having these skills will be very beneficial in the future. This class was different because instead of taking a written test for my final exam, I had the opportunity to create and design my own website.

I thought I knew how to write a good essay before taking this course, but I have learned skills to help me write a great one in this class. Professor Hammett has been an excellent teacher; even though the course was not in person, she still made sure to help me where needed. I had never taken an online class before, so I struggled a little, but she always helped me figure everything out. I loved how much time I was given to write my essays, and I never had to worry about the due date. She always gave us plenty of time to write and review our assignments.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course. I learned so many skills that I can take with me when I go to college in the fall of this year, like how to write a rhetorical analysis essay and how to work with absurdists. Professor Hammett changed my perspective on writing for the better through the course of this class. And as an added bonus, I found a new style of books to add to my reading list.
